The Durham Region is quickly becoming one of our nation’s most sought-after areas to raise a family. With a very high quality of life that includes an extensive network of elementary, middle, high school and colleges/universities, the Durham Region is home to many unique and vibrant learning environments. Knox Christian School located in Bowmanville, Ontario, has been providing educational excellence to Durham Residents for over 60 years, and still serves as a key part of the education system in the region.
We recently sat down with Paul Marcus, Principal of Knox Christian School, to find a little bit about what makes this learning community such an important part of the education system in the Durham Region.
Greg Schryer: What is the mission of Knox Christian School and what grades do you teach?
Paul Marcus: Knox Christian School is “A Community of Learners who Love God and Serve Others”. Our vision is to be a top-quality academic, faith-based school with an emphasis on partnerships with family and community. We serve students from preschool to Grade 8. We exist as an alternative to publically-funded schools to more closely reflect the educational desires, both philosophically and academically, of families within Clarington.
Greg Schryer: Does Knox Christian School follow the Ontario curriculum? How is it different than public schools?
Paul Marcus: Knox Christian School meets and exceeds the Ontario curricular standards. Our curriculum reflects a deep desire to incorporate the Christian faith and an emphasis on character development. These desires are woven throughout the curriculum from Mathematics to Science to Music to the Arts.
Greg Schryer: Why does Knox Christian have such focus on sports and music?
Paul Marcus: We feel that a great education includes all aspects of the God-given human experience. This includes subjects like Mathematics, Science, and the Languages, but also acknowledges that sports and music are an important part of academic development and human expression.
Greg Schryer: Who can attend Knox Christian School and are there transportation options?
Paul Marcus: Enrolment at Knox is open to anyone who desires for their children to engage in education aligned with our core philosophies – Christian faith, character formation, rigorous academics, and serving others. We have busing within certain boundaries. Included in tuition fees is transportation to Townline to the West, Concession Road 8 to the North, and Newtonville Road to the East.
Greg Schryer: How is Knox Christian School involved in the greater community?
Paul Marcus: One of our core beliefs is that because of our faith in and love for God, we are to serve others. We have a program in all of our grades where children are engaged in service projects for their school, local, and global community. Our students have helped to raise funds for a home in Sri Lanka, have visited nursing homes, and have given thoughtful cards to their local service people, for example. This is all an effort to help our students realize an importance greater than themselves.
